The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior

Street Kings

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:27 CDT

David Ayer, who wrote TRAINING DAY, gives us another unflinching look at disillusionment and questionable decision-making within the ranks of the LAPD. Ayer's second directorial effort tells the story of burnt-out Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), a functioning alcoholic and undisciplined detective with the Special Vice Unit. While so much of this characterization appears resonatingly familiar at first, we soon learn that the character here has been tweaked. While this loose cannon in no way does things by the book, he is also far from playing by his own rules. Ludlow is relied upon by the other detectives in the unit, and by their almost maniacally ambitious Captain Wander (Forest Whitaker), to go outside the law whenever needed. The infractions he is pressured to commit are quickly and uncomplainingly covered up by Captain Wander, while Ludlow and the rest of Special Vice receive accolades for their high clearance rate. Not until one of these cover-ups leads to the brutal murder of his ex-partner (Terry Crews) does Ludlow try to dispel the apathy (and the vodka fumes) clouding his purpose. This procedural melodrama is almost completely internalized within the LAPD, as Vice cops investigate Narcotics cops, who snitch on Homicide cops, and no one talks to Internal Affairs, etc. Crimes are staged, executed, and pinned firmly on suspects with alarming efficiency as the necessary DNA, murder weapons, and fingerprints are then sprinkled around the scenes after the fact.

A study in familiar elements slightly skewed, STREET KINGS provides a satisfying dose of bright, loud, violent police work blended with the right amount of discreetly passed interoffice envelopes to keep the taut intrigue in step with the body count. Little time is wasted on exposition, and the audience's ability to extrapolate is given a great deal of credit as Ludlow's dead wife, substance abuse, and past career troubles are flashed at us briefly, then put away in favor of the crisis at hand. (1 hr. 48 min.)

Immortal

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:26 CDT

The New York of 2095 retains some of its past majesty, such as the Empire State Building, and many other skyscrapers. But the skyline is principally dominated by a huge floating pyramid that has appeared, apparently sent by ancient Egyptian Gods. This is the scenario that director Enki Bilal sets for his film, IMMORTAL, which was among the first to shoot actors playing out their entire roles against a blue screen, then depositing them in a computer-generated environment in post-production. The pyramid has appeared in the skyline so the Gods can rid themselves of Horus (Thomas M. Pollard), who scours Manhattan for a suitable human body to inhabit. As he searches for a mate, Horus's life is irrevocably thrown together with a strange, blue-haired girl who is embarking on a quest that mirrors the hero's own. A sci-fi epic that resembles genre favorites such as THE FIFTH ELEMENT and THE MATRIX, Bilal based the action on his own comic strips, producing an innovative, action-packed movie in the process.

Prom Night

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:25 CDT

It's been three years since her family was murdered by a teacher obsessed with her, and Donna (Brittany Snow) is getting ready to go to the prom with her boyfriend, Bobby (Scott Porter). Now living with her aunt and uncle, Donna has just started having nightmares again about the tragedy, especially the part where she was hiding under the bed as she watched the teacher, Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech), kill her mother. On prom night, Detective Winn (Idris Elba), who handled the original case, is suddenly told that three days ago Fenton had broken out of the psychiatric hospital where he was imprisoned, and is now missing. With a strong suspicion that Fenton will be heading after Donna to fulfill what he believes is his destiny--to be with her--Winn and Detective Nash (James Ransone) go to the prom, which is being held in a lavish hotel, to keep their eyes on Donna and to watch out for Fenton. But Fenton is a crafty villain, already on another murderous rampage as he makes his way toward Donna, who he believes belongs to him and only him. Nelson McCormick's remake of the 1980 thriller PROM NIGHT, which starred scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, has been completely reimagined by screenwriter J. S. Cardone. Instead of focusing on the body count and grisly methods of murder, McCormick--who has directed episodes of such hit television shows as E.R., COLD CASE, and HOUSE--delves more into the mind of the characters, especially Donna, Fenton, and Winn. The creepy mood is enhanced by cinematographer Checco Varese's shadowy photography and Paul Haslinger's eerie score. Dana Davis gives an excellent supporting performance as Donna's friend Lisa, who is determined to be named prom queen over snobby rich girl Crissy Lynn (Brianne Davis). (1 hr. 28 min.)

Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:24 CDT

Based on the hit Disney television show, HANNAH MONTANA/MILEY CYRUS: BEST OF BOTH WORLDS CONCERT TOUR 3-D provides dedicated fans an all-access pass to the Best of Both Worlds concert tour. Leaving behind character Miley Stewart, the concert instead splits time between pop phenom Hannah Montana and Cyrus, who assumes the role of Montana's "ordinary girl" alter ego. Footage of the concert is interspersed with numerous behind-the-scene vignettes. Among these are pre-tour rehearsals--orchestrated by HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL impresario Kenny Ortega--and a touching jam session with father Billy Ray Cyrus. Also included are ecstatic fan testimonials and the film's most humorous moment, in which fathers race each other in high-heeled shoes for the chance to win concert tickets and backstage passes. Montana/Cyrus is joined on stage by the Jonas Brothers, who whip up the crowd with their own brand of high-energy pop. The film employs most of its 3-D tricks in the opening credits then pulls back the reins to focus on giving viewers the next best thing to actually being at the show. Filled with fist-pumping anthems ("Girls Night Out," "Nobody's Perfect," and the title track), BEST OF BOTH WORLDS remains true to the television show's dual personality theme: through good times and bad, every girl is her own superstar. For fans and parents alike, it's a wholesome and empowering message wrapped up in pure infectious fun. (1 hr. 40 min.)

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:22 CDT

As in MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS and BEING JULIA, this period comedy brings wit and style to its depiction of 1930s London. Based on Winifred Watson's novel, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY begins with the title character, a frumpy governess winningly played by Frances McDormand (FARGO), being turned away from her employment agency. After losing her job prospects and all her earthly possessions in a mishap, Guinevere Pettigrew isn't sure where her next meal is coming from. But some cleverness leads her to the door of aspiring actress Delysia Lafosse, a woman who needs a social secretary to juggle her three men: a nightclub owner (Mark Strong), a son of a theater producer (Tom Payne), and a piano player (Lee Pace). The first two offer her a chance at stardom, but the pianist can't give her anything but love. In a single day, Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia navigate the ever-stormy waters of love, while she learns that romance may not only be reserved for the young.

With its witty script and jazzy score, MISS PETTIGREW may seem feather-light at times, but there's an undercurrent of sadness that gives the comedy a bit of weight. World War II is just about to come to London, and the echoes of the previous war still haunt those who can remember it. Unsurprisingly, McDormand gives a fantastic performance as the title character, but the effervescent Adams continues to surprise, even after turning in great work in JUNEBUG and ENCHANTED. As impressive as the two female leads are, there are some excellent performances from two male costars: Ciáran Hinds (MARGOT AT THE WEDDING) is perfectly warm as a lingerie designer Miss Pettigrew encounters, and Pace (PUSHING DAISIES) wins hearts as the faithful Michael. Costume designer Michael O'Connor also deserves praise for creating the film's eye-catching clothing. (1 hr. 32 min.)

The Proposition

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:17 CDT

Australian director John Hillcoat and singer Nick Cave reconvene for 2006's THE PROPOSITION, with Cave penning the screenplay and providing a soundtrack written with Dirty Three member Warren Ellis. Cave's 19th-century tale begins with the proposition of the title, as Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) captures fugitive brothers Charley (Guy Pearce) and Mikey Burns (Richard Wilson) at a scene of bloody rape and murder. Informing Charley that he must kill his older brother, Arthur (Danny Huston), in order to be set free, Stanley drags Mikey to a decrepit jailhouse while he waits for Charley to carry out the deed.

Hillcoat's western reeks of the dry desert heat, with flies buzzing, temperatures soaring, and emotions spiraling out of control. As Charley reluctantly sets about his task, Hillcoat and cinematographer Benoît Delhomme create a mesmerizing vision of the Australian outback. The slow, meandering pace of the film is peppered with brutal jolts of unremitting violence, and there are fine performances from the entire cast, who are supported in small but significant roles from Emily Watson (BREAKING THE WAVES) and John Hurt (THE ELEPHANT MAN). Cave's screenplay is tight and focused, leaving little room for sentiment--or anyone for the audience to root for--by giving all his principal characters plenty of grimly undesirable personality traits. But it works perfectly, and in Winstone and Pearce, Hillcoat got his casting exactly right. Both actors give dizzying performances as two men unable to escape their personal demons, finding a tragic outlet only in ceaseless acts of aggression. A memorable feature that lingers long after the last frame of celluloid has flickered onto the screen, THE PROPOSITION establishes Hillcoat as a director of major gravitas. (104 min.)

Nixon

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:22:14 CDT

Using a nonchronological narrative style à la CITIZEN KANE (from which he quotes), director Oliver Stone explores former president Richard Nixon's strict Quaker upbringing, his nascent political strivings in law school, and his strangely self-effacing courtship of his wife, Pat (played by Joan Allen). The contradictions in his character are revealed early, in the vicious campaign against Helen Gahagan Douglas and the oddly masochistic Checkers speech. His defeat at the hands of the hated and envied John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential election, followed by the loss of the 1962 California gubernatorial race, seem to signal the end of his career. Yet, although wholly lacking in charisma, Nixon remains a brilliant political operator,
seizing the opportunity provided by the backlash against the antiwar movement
to take the presidency in 1968. It is only when safely in office, running far ahead in the polls for the 1972 presidential election, that his growing paranoia comes to full flower, triggering the Watergate scandal.

Surprisingly, Stone evinces considerable compassion as he gives us a Nixon of tragic stature and nearly Shakespearean dimension in this powerfully moving film. The star-studded cast, including Ed Harris and James Woods, complements Hopkins's extraordinary performance. (3 hrs. 10 min.)

Chronicle of an Escape

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:21:57 CDT

Set during the late 1970s military coup in Argentina and based on a true story, Adrian Caetano's CHRONICLE OF AN ESCAPE is a disquieting portrait of a young man who is wrongly suspected of being a member of a militant group. Claudio (Rodrigo de la Serna) returns from soccer practice and is arrested by some heavily mustachioed officials who blindfold him and take him to an abandoned house. There Claudio is tortured and endlessly questioned, along with other young men who are also being held. Caetano piles on the agony as the brutal and dehumanizing treatment meted out by the guards descends into outright humiliation and agony for Claudio and the other prisoners. But as the title of the film suggests, the prisoners have an escape plan in mind, and the tension really escalates as they put the daring scheme into practice.

Caetano perfectly captures the feeling of despair that Claudio and the other men must have felt. The director often shoots his principal actors in tight close-up shots, giving a feeling of nauseating claustrophobia and intense helplessness. The finest piece of casting may be in the house itself, which appears to have endless labyrinthine corridors and dank, musty rooms that all look like they've witnessed unthinkable acts of human degradation. CHRONICLE OF AN ESCAPE ends up falling somewhere in between the powerful dynamics of Fernando Meirelles's CITY OF GOD and the somber gloom of Krzysztof Kieslowski's A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING, giving it a broad appeal that should find favor with both the art house crowd and a more mainstream audience. (1 hr. 43 min.)

The original 1985 comedy follows Fletch as he slips into dozens of different identities (each crazier than the next) to investigate his stories; while tracking a drug deal, he gets pulled into a far more complex case when the wealthy Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) propositions him for murder. Fletch's disguise-heavy adventures continue in FLETCH LIVES (1989), a sequel which sees the reporter inherit a Louisiana estate and wind up in the middle of a mysterious land grab. This collection features a making-of special, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the creation of Fletch's many outrageous personas.

Quid Pro Quo

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:21:37 CDT

This somber yet sexy psychodrama stars Nick Stahl as Isaac, a paraplegic radio journalist who gets entangled with a cult of "wannabes," i.e. people who wish they were paralyzed or missing limbs, or who pretend to be paralyzed so they can travel around in a wheelchair. His entry into this bizarre world is Fiona (Vera Farmiga), a mysterious beauty who lures him into one strange "quid pro quo" bargain after another. Eventually, the repressed events surrounding Nick's childhood car accident (he was orphaned and left paralyzed) come into play, he finds a pair of seemingly magic shoes, and nothing is what it seems, except the raw desire, guilt, and fear that propel these characters on collision courses deep into each other's noir-stained psyches. QUID PRO QUO is the feature debut for writer-director Carlos Brooks, and it slinks along on the subtle pathways of Sundance-style indie plot exposition, bending the film to wheelchair-level view through a well thought-out maze of little touches. Director of photography Michael McDonough captures (as if in golden amber) the bruised flesh and velvet wallpaper, the filtered sunshine and dusky wooden surfaces of a perennially autumnal dream world. Stahl is good but Farmiga steals the show in another live wire, wide-eyed performance. Like her work in previous years (in Sundance indies JOSHUA and DOWN TO THE BONE), her performance here would be judged in the same league with the bared-soul brilliance of James Dean or pre-accident Montgomery Clift were this an gender bias-free world. Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo) did the score. (1 hr. 22 min.)

Orson Welles' Don Quixote

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:21:33 CDT

Cervantes' epic novel DON QUIXOTE is notoriously un-filmable--several major directors have tried, only to be left with half of a finished project after a series of disasters. The most mysterious of these incomplete attempts belongs to Orson Welles; the legendary director began shooting his adaptation in 1955, but a final product was never released. This presentation of ORSON WELLES' DON QUIXOTE is a simulation of the auteur's vision, crafted after his death by assistant director Jess Franco using Welles's extensive notes and copious raw footage.

Wizard Of Gore

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 3:21:31 CDT

This unnerving remake adds further story and character depth to Herschell Gordon Lewis's bizarre 1970 shocker. When wastrel Edmund Bigelow (Kip Pardue), a trust-fund baby and part-time amateur journalist, attends one of the Magnificent Montag's shows, he is stricken with awe and terror along with the rest of the audience as the magician butchers female crowd volunteers on stage before the lights finally go up and the women are revealed to still be alive and intact. Unlike the rest of the audience, however, Edmund just can't let the unexplainable occurrence go. He is only further bewildered by the realization that the girls do indeed eventually turn up dead and in the same horrific condition in which they appear during Montag's shows. Is the Magnificent Montag displacing time? Is he in fact a murderer? Are his secrets even more unnerving than anyone could ever imagine? Edmond takes a headlong journey into an utterly depraved world of morbid brutality, carnivalesque Grand Guignol, and primitive drug use as he habitually attends the mysterious magician's performances, losing his sanity along the way. This head-trip of a movie sports of a cast of seasoned veterans of the disturbed and macabre, including Bijou Phillips (HOSTEL: PART II), Jeffrey Combs (RE-ANIMATOR), Brad Dourif (CHILD'S PLAY), Joshua John Miller (NEAR DARK), and the inimitably bizarre Crispin Glover as the Magnificent Montag.
